2024 Data Dump - Next Chapter Studio

2024 Data Dump

To close out 2024, we took a look at our revenue numbers. We have a lot of pots on the stove at Next Chapter so we were curious to see how the different streams break down. These are pure revenue numbers - percentages of money coming in the door. It doesn’t take into account any of our overhead, materials, things like wholesale commissions, or purchases made for Shop inventory (ahem, a large expense for sure).

Pie chart for 2024 showing 62% Wholesale, 9% Retail, 10% Brick & Mortar, 18% Custom Printing, and 1% Workshops

Retail = anywhere we sell direct to consumer.
Brick & Mortar = in person retail store, Shop @ Next Chapter Studio.
Custom Printing = cards we print for other people and lines.
Workshops = in person printing lessons.
Wholesale = all of our B2B.

Here are a few category breakdowns:

Pie chart for 2024 Retail showing 56% Online Store, 39% Etsy, and 5% Markets
Pie chart for 2024 Wholesale showing 88% Small Businesses, 12% National Chains
Bar Chart for 2024 Brick & Mortar showing month to month comparisons. January and July being the lowest months. March, August and September being midrange. December being the highest by 2-3 times.

As a comparison, here's 2023:

Pie chart for 2023 showing 71% wholesale, 7% retail, 8% Brick & Mortar, 12% Custom Printing, and 2% Licensing

In general our business continues to grow! I’ve seen a few illustrators do breakdowns like this and have found it super insightful. Businesses with many revenue streams fluctuate year to year. It was honestly a little surprising to see these numbers come together and helps us know what to focus on in 2025. I’d love to see Custom Printing and Workshops grow even more! And a good reminder that we are first and foremost a Wholesale business, and that other small businesses are our primary customers.
